Automatic Boiler Fill Valve: Operation, Setting and Installation
Learn how an automatic boiler fill valve tops up lost water in closed heating systems to keep the system pressure constant, and how to set and install it correctly.

In closed hot-water heating systems the system pressure drops over time: small leaks, air released through automatic air vents and water drained during maintenance all reduce the water content of the circuit. An automatic boiler fill valve is a pressure reducing valve that lowers the mains water pressure and feeds water into the system only until the set pressure is reached, then shuts off automatically.
This article explains how an automatic boiler fill valve works, what its built-in strainer and check valve do, typical technical values and the key points for correct installation.
How Does an Automatic Boiler Fill Valve Work?
The valve contains a spring-loaded diaphragm or piston. The spring force is set with an adjusting knob or screw according to the required system pressure:
- When pressure drops: Once the downstream pressure falls below the set value, the spring force prevails, the seat opens and mains water enters the system.
- When the set pressure is reached: The outlet pressure acting on the diaphragm balances the spring and the valve closes.
- Balanced (compensated) seat: In many models the seat is pressure-balanced so that fluctuations in the inlet pressure do not affect the outlet setting; the system pressure stays constant even if the mains pressure changes.
The valve also fills the system automatically up to the set pressure during initial filling, preventing over-filling and safety valve discharge that often occur with manual filling.
Built-in Components
- Strainer: Protects the seat and diaphragm from sand, rust and sediment in the mains water. The Ayvaz model, for example, uses an 800 µm stainless steel strainer.
- Check valve: Prevents system water from flowing back into the mains.
- Shut-off element: Allows the supply to be isolated for maintenance or in case of a fault.
- Pressure gauge: Shows the set outlet pressure and the system pressure.
Typical Technical Values
Values depend on the brand and model. Examples from the 1/2″ automatic boiler fill valves supplied by ORFA:
| Model | Setting range | Max. inlet pressure / rating | Max. temperature | Body |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ayvaz 1/2″ | 1.5 – 6 bar | 25 bar | 80 °C | Nickel-plated brass |
| F.A.R.G 503/1 1/2″ | 0.5 – 3 bar | Model-dependent | 80 °C | Brass |
| PAKKENS 1/2″ | 0.5 – 4 bar | PN10 | 80 °C | Brass |
The 80 °C limit applies to the water passing through the valve; the valve is therefore connected to the cold make-up line, usually on the return side, not to the hot flow of the boiler.
Why Automatic Filling?
- Stable system pressure: Sufficient static pressure reduces air ingress at high points and low-pressure problems (risk of cavitation) at the circulating pump suction.
- Less human error: The risks of over-filling or under-filling during manual top-up are eliminated.
- Leak detection: Continuous feeding is a sign of a leak in the system. Constant fresh water brings in oxygen and hardness, increasing corrosion and scaling, so make-up should be monitored and leaks fixed without delay. A water meter can be fitted on the make-up line if needed.
Applications
- Central heating and hot-water heating systems with closed expansion vessels
- Boiler rooms in residential, commercial and industrial buildings
- Closed-loop heating and process hot-water circuits
Installation and Setting Rules
- Fit isolating valves upstream and downstream for easy maintenance.
- Observe the flow arrow on the body; feed the valve from the cold mains supply.
- Choose a set pressure clearly below the opening pressure of the boiler safety valve; it is usually based on the static height of the highest point of the system plus a small margin.
- Adjust the setting with the system cold and verify it on the gauge.
- Clean the strainer periodically.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pressure should an automatic boiler fill valve be set to?
The setting depends on the height of the system and must stay below the opening pressure of the boiler safety valve. Residential and small-building systems typically use around 1–2 bar; the adjustment range can be, for example, 1.5–6 bar or 0.5–4 bar depending on the model.
What does it mean if the valve keeps feeding water?
There may be a leak, a faulty safety valve or an air vent that keeps discharging. Since constant fresh water increases corrosion and scaling, the cause should be found and fixed.
Is the built-in check valve enough for backflow protection?
The built-in check valve stops system water from returning to the mains, but some regulations require a separate, higher-category backflow preventer on heating system connections. Check the local rules.
Conclusion
An automatic boiler fill valve keeps a closed heating system at its set pressure and helps it run safely and efficiently. With a correct setting, suitable backflow protection and regular strainer cleaning it provides many years of trouble-free service.
