What Does a Pressure Gauge Cock Do?

Isolates the gauge: The gauge can be removed and replaced while the line is in operation.
Enables zero checks: Three-way cocks can vent the gauge to atmosphere so the pointer’s return to zero can be checked.
Provides a test connection: Models with a test flange or third port allow a check gauge to be connected to verify readings.
Protects the gauge: Where readings are only taken occasionally, keeping the cock closed protects the gauge from constant pressure, surges and vibration.

Working Principle

Open: Line pressure reaches the gauge and the value is read.
Closed: The connection between line and gauge is shut off; the gauge can be removed safely.
Vent/test position (three-way models): With the line closed, the gauge side is vented or the test connection is brought into service.

Tip: On steam lines, always fit a siphon (U or O type) between the cock and the line. Condensate collected in the siphon prevents hot steam from reaching the gauge and protects the measuring element.

Types of Gauge Cocks

Two-way cocks: Simple on/off isolation of the gauge.
Three-way cocks: In addition to isolation, allow venting of the gauge side or connection of a test gauge.
Push-button cocks: Pass pressure to the gauge only while the button is pressed; suitable for spot checks.
