What Is a Globe Valve? Design, Advantages and Applications
Learn the design, operating principle, types and applications of globe valves used for both shut-off and flow regulation on steam, high-temperature water and process lines.

Steam, high-temperature water and process lines operating at high pressure and temperature need both reliable shut-off and flow regulation. Thanks to its disc and seat design, the globe valve can perform both duties and is one of the most widely used valve types in industry.
This article covers the design, operating principle, advantages and limitations, types and applications of globe valves.
What Is a Globe Valve?
The globe valve is named after the spherical (globe-shaped) body of traditional designs. An internal partition divides the body into inlet and outlet chambers, and the valve seat sits in the opening of this partition. Flow is opened, throttled or shut off by moving a disc towards the seat.
Design and Operating Principle
- The valve basically consists of the body, bonnet, stem, disc and handwheel.
- The disc is attached to a threaded stem; turning the handwheel moves the stem and disc up and down, perpendicular to the seat.
- When the valve closes, the disc sits on the seat and stops the flow; as the disc moves away from the seat, the flow area opens.
- External sealing is provided by the stem packing (or a metal bellows in bellows-sealed types) and the bonnet gasket; internal sealing by disc-to-seat contact.
Because the flow changes direction inside the body to pass through the seat, a globe valve has a higher pressure drop than gate or ball valves, even when fully open. On the other hand, the opening between disc and seat can be varied precisely, making it very well suited to flow regulation.
Advantages
- Good throttling capability: Disc position allows accurate flow adjustment.
- Reliable shut-off: The disc is pressed directly onto the seat, giving good tightness.
- Short stroke: The disc travel from fully open to fully closed is short, so operation is quicker than with gate valves.
- High pressure and temperature capability: With a suitable body material, globe valves are used safely on steam and high-temperature water lines.
- Easy maintenance: The disc and seat can often be renewed or repaired without removing the valve from the line.
Types of Globe Valves
| Type | Feature |
|---|---|
| Straight (Z-pattern) | The most common design; inlet and outlet are on the same axis. |
| Angle pattern | Flow turns through 90°; used where a pipe bend is needed and eliminates the elbow. |
| Y-pattern | The stem is inclined; the flow path is straighter, so pressure drop is lower than with the Z-pattern. |
Applications
- Steam boilers and steam distribution systems
- High-temperature hot water systems
- Hot and cold water systems
- Compressed air systems
- Non-acidic, non-alkaline chemical media
- Ammonia and oil lines
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a globe valve and a gate valve?
A gate valve is designed only to be fully open or fully closed and has a very low pressure drop. A globe valve is suited to flow regulation, has a shorter stroke and reliable shut-off, but a higher pressure drop.
Why does a globe valve cause more pressure drop?
The medium changes direction as it passes the internal partition and the seat. These changes in direction cause more pressure loss than straight-through valves. Where pressure drop matters, Y-pattern globe valves can be preferred.
Can a globe valve be used on a steam line?
Yes. With a suitable body material and pressure class, globe valves are among the most widely used shut-off and regulating valves on steam lines.
Conclusion
With reliable shut-off and accurate flow regulation, globe valves stand out on steam, high-temperature water and process lines. Choosing the right type, material and pressure class ensures a long service life. Explore models of different types and sizes in our globe valves product group.
