Steam Pipe Capacity Table by Pipe Size, with Calculator
Saturated steam capacities of DN15–DN150 steel pipes from 0.1 to 100 bar g at 30 m/s, with the formula, velocity guidance and a pipe sizing calculator.

The steam pipe capacity of a line is the mass of saturated steam it can carry per hour at a given pressure and velocity. It is the first figure checked when sizing steam mains, branch lines and steam distribution manifolds: an undersized pipe leads to high velocity, noise, erosion and pressure drop, while an oversized one increases installation cost and heat losses.
The table below gives capacities of DN15–DN150 steel pipes at a steam velocity of 30 m/s for pressures from 0.1 to 100 bar g. Use the calculator to find the capacity for another velocity, pressure or bore, or to pick a pipe size for a required steam flow.
How Is Steam Capacity Calculated?
The steam mass flow through a pipe is the product of steam density, velocity and the internal cross-sectional area:
ṁ (kg/h) = 3600 × ρ (kg/m³) × v (m/s) × π × d² / 4
Here d is the inside diameter in metres. Because steam density rises quickly with pressure, the same pipe carries much more steam by mass at higher pressure. A DN100 pipe (bore 107.1 mm) at 30 m/s carries about 1,110 kg/h at 1 bar g but about 5,490 kg/h at 10 bar g.
Which Steam Velocity Should Be Used?
- Saturated steam mains: typically 25–40 m/s; the table is based on 30 m/s.
- Short branches and equipment connections: lower velocities may be preferred to limit noise and erosion.
- Superheated steam lines: higher velocities are acceptable because there is no condensate.
Velocity alone is not enough: on long lines the pressure drop must also be checked to make sure the pressure at the end of the line is still sufficient for the consumers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I size a steam main using this table alone?
The table is suitable for initial sizing by velocity. On long lines the pressure drop should also be calculated and the pressure at the end of the line checked against consumer requirements.
Why does the same pipe carry more steam at higher pressure?
Steam is compressible, so its density increases with pressure. At the same velocity and cross-section, the mass passing per unit time increases in proportion to density.
What about pipes with a different wall thickness?
Enter the actual bore of your pipe in the calculator. Capacity varies with the square of the inside diameter, so even a few millimetres make a noticeable difference.
